Cleaning Up
As reported in last week's blog, we moved several apartments. We are always amused at what we find stuffed in closets, under beds and in the bathrooms. The missionaries love writing their names on the bottom of desk drawers and placing pictures and sayings in their shower. here is an example of a desk drawer and a copy of The Living Christ taped up in the shower. We have also found images of the Savior and President Nelson in showers. Others will place such images on the bathroom mirror or on the bathroom wall across from the toilet (at eye level when sitting).
Some apartments the missionaries have occupied for quite some time...and it shows. We are not so amused at all the junk that accumulates. This past week was devoted almost exclusively to cleaning out three apartments. So far it has taken a combined six days and four runs to the dump with at least one more day and one more dump run to go to clean out those apartments. On top of that, we have professional house and carpet cleaners coming in to perform their services. This is one reason we move missionaries from time to time - things can get out of control. Missionaries are hard on their apartments. Cleaning is low on their priority list. We always talk to them about keeping their apartments clean, neat and clutter free, but this latest experience has prompted ourselves and the mission leaders to make a renewed push for cleanliness. P-Day is not just for play, but designed, in part, to clean. For the mission newsletter this week we asked Grok (an AI program) to do the following; "Write a short poem which tells missionaries that they need to take at least one hour (30 minutes each missionary) on their preparation day to clean their apartment prior to play". The result came up almost instantaneously - amazing:
To be fair, this is not always the case. In fact, most missionaries do a fairly good job keeping their place nice. The Sisters (as you can imagine) are better on average than the Elders. Although, occasionally, the Elders blow us away. The below is Elder Hill's closet we noted upon our last inspection. Very nice.
So that's it for this past week. Lots of cleaning and going to the dump. Transfers are this coming week. Whenever that happens we go into logistics mode - finding out who's going where and if we need to set up more beds, dressers, etc. Last night was the mission wide zoom call announcing transfers so tomorrow we will go to a couple of places to get them ready. No bad this time - small numbers coming and going.
One transfer happening for which we are sad is Elder and Sister Nate, Mission Finance Coordinator and Mission Secretary, complete their mission and leave this coming Thursday. They have served faithfully and with distinction for the past 18 months. We will miss them dearly. A few of the local Senior Couples and the Mission Leaders gathered on Friday night at a farewell dinner to thank them and wish them well.
