Safety and Good Changes
The phone rang at 4:20 am. Sister Cawley, who is usually pretty groggy in the morning, was, in an instant, in mom mode. Turns out the smoke /CO2 detector went off and the four Elders in the apartment got freaked out, went to the church and called us. After checking everything out and making sure the missionaries were safe, they returned back to their apartment. We returned to bed but were now wide awake. Ya just never know.
Earlier in the week (as mentioned in our last blog) we moved two sets of missionaries (one Elders and one Sisters) whose living conditions were deemed unsafe. Both companionships are now so happy. The Sisters went from the worst place (a dingy, basement dungeon with only one window and filled with flies), to the nicest place - a 2 bedroom cottage on Clearlake. They deserved it. Our mission president agreed and decided not to transfer either Sister so they can enjoy their new place for another six weeks at least. We were so happy seeing how happy they were.
Our mission extends north along the California coast. Turns out there is a group of people within the missionary department in Salt Lake whose job is to monitor weather and pending disasters around the world. They contacted our mission about the tsunami warning and told us to evacuate our missionaries from the coast. None of their apartments are close to the water but we moved them further inland anyways. As we know, the tsunami turned out not to be big where we are. Nonetheless, it was a good implementation of our emergency procedures.
More safety concerns. We received a call from some missionaries who said they did not feel safe where they live. They had homeless people sleeping outside their door and there is a halfway house across the street. We immediately took action by having another senior couple in the area check out the situation. They agreed with the Elders that the situation was not good. The next day we found them a nice apartment in a good area and will move them next week. Once again, they are very happy which makes us happy.
Given all that we have seen, we are on a mission (no pun intended) to inspect every apartment for safety.
This past week we moved three sets of missionaries, signed a lease for a senior apartment and applied to three more which we hope to close this week. Busy.
Last night we went to dinner with the Elders who serve in our assigned ward in Healdsburg. They suggested a really good restaurant in Windsor which is a super cute town between Santa Rosa and Healdsburg. One of the Elders, Elder White, completes his mission and returns home to St. George next week so it was a nice farewell dinner. His companion, Elder Sommers, is also getting transferred (so a white wash as they call it).
